Partial Solar Eclipse - Monday April 8, 2024

On Monday April 8, a partial solar eclipse will take place in the sky over British Columbia between approximately 10:40 AM and 12:20 PM. This rare celestial event will no doubt result in great learning conversations in classrooms, but nonetheless must be approached with safety in mind. Experts warn that it is crucial to avoid looking directly at the sun during any eclipse, especially for children, as it can lead to permanent damage to the retina causing partial or complete loss of eyesight.

At this time, local weather forecasts in Northwest BC are calling for extensive cloud cover and precipitation (rain and/or snow) during Monday’s event, which will significantly limit visibility of the eclipse and minimize any risk.

Given this information, schools in Coast Mountains School District will be asked to make school-specific decisions if necessary to protect students, especially those at elementary grades, such as keeping students indoors in the event of clearing skies.
