Hello Everyone,

Well, suddenly it is that time of year again!  I have enjoyed great concerts and events in schools and far too many Christmas treats already, and am really enjoying the festive atmosphere that staff and students have created in our buildings.

As you all prepare to enjoy some time away from the job and the chance to catch up with all the personal pieces of our lives that we often overlook during this busy time, I wish you a very relaxing and happy holiday season.  Having our calendar closing schools the week before Christmas this year will hopefully make the relaxing part more possible.

It’s been quite the year for me since arriving in the Coast Mountains School District last December and I again want to thank all of you for making me feel so welcome.  We certainly have our challenges as a district, but from the day I arrived, I have been convinced that this district has a very positive future.

In January, our newly elected Board of Education will be moving forward with our focus on district goals, in particular the goals to raise literacy levels in district elementary schools and to increase success and graduation rates for all learners. At the Education Committee and at the Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee we will be discussing student performance data, actions and strategies that could be designed to make a difference for our learners.

I invite you to have similar conversations in your buildings and to make inquiry about learning part of your daily lives.  Because you see, whatever your job is in our district, the more you think and talk about how well students are learning, the better they will learn.  And once we start that conversation we get closer to having the celebration conversation, because there are many good stories waiting to be told about learning in Coast Mountains.

My very best wishes to you all –

Nancy Wells

Superintendent of Schools
